What the metal tiers really mean
Metal tiers describe how you and the plan split covered costs, not the quality of care. Bronze plans cover about 60% of expected medical costs, Silver 70%, Gold 80%, Platinum 90%. Lower tiers mean lower premiums and higher out-of-pocket when you use care.
Silver plans and cost-sharing subsidies
If your household income is 100-250% of the federal poverty level, Silver plans on the ACA marketplace unlock cost-sharing reductions that lower your deductible and copays. This makes Silver the best value for most subsidy-eligible enrollees.
HMO vs PPO vs EPO
HMO requires you to stay in-network and get referrals — lowest premiums. PPO lets you see out-of-network providers for a higher cost and skips referrals. EPO is in-network only but no referrals needed.
HSA-eligible high-deductible plans
If you're healthy and want to build a tax-advantaged medical savings account, an HSA-qualified HDHP lets you contribute pre-tax dollars, grow them tax-free, and withdraw them tax-free for medical expenses — a triple tax benefit.
Special enrollment periods
Outside open enrollment, you can enroll after a qualifying life event: marriage, birth, job loss, moving, or losing other coverage. You have 60 days from the event.
